Airfares Scandal Revealed

You can fly from Berlin to Latvia for $11.
Or can you? You can fly from New York to Los Angeles for $50. Or can you? Check out
the biggest travel scandal in years.

In Europe it is a free-for-all for the major European Airlines operating out of
France, Germany and Great Britain.

Under the guise of fuel surcharges being levied which bear little relationship to
the cost of oil and are presently the subject of price fixing investigations by the
OFT in the UK and the DOT in the US passengers are being overcharged with fuel
surcharges alone.

Let\'s go back to the $11 fare from Berlin to Latvia. When everything was said and
done the actual total fare came out to be $52. An increase of 400% over the
initially offered price. This total fare was never mentioned in the ticket booking
process and showed up as an afterthought when it was time to pay.

In the US things are more flexible.

For US carriers flying international routes fuel surcharges range around $65 per
person.

At present the U.S. Department of Transportation requires airlines to disclose in
the airfare all extra charges such as taxes, home security and airport fees.

There are, however, proposed DOT changes that will allow airlines to hide additional
charges until the purchase is actually made.(Only after you click \"buy\" does this
price show up.)

You\'ll then see things like:

Basic Fare: $50 which is what was presented to you when you made the original
inquiry.
Fuel Surcharge $65
Carpet Cleaning Fee $18
Airplane Wax job $34
Legal Fees to keep us out of Bankruptcy $83

For a total fee of $250.- which you are not aware of until you hit the \"buy\" button.

Unless you write your senator or complain to the Department of Transport these
proposed DOT changes will probably pass and might cost you a lot of money.
